The Content Confidence Loop: How Creating More Builds Your Belief

Hey Reader,

Ever catch yourself thinking "I'll start posting when I feel more confident"? I hear this all the time from creators, and I used to think the same way. But here's what I've learned after years of creating content and working with thousands of creators:

The secret to confidence isn't waiting—it's doing the work.

Here's what I mean...

Many creators wait until they feel confident before they start publishing regularly. But here's the secret: Confidence isn't a prerequisite—it's a result. The only way to feel comfortable with your work is to show up and do it consistently.

The Creator Confidence Loop

Picture this: Every piece of content you publish is like dropping a pebble in a pond. Each ripple builds on the last, creating a powerful momentum that looks something like this:

  1. You create something (even if it's not "perfect")
  2. You put it out into the world
  3. You get a small win (maybe a comment or like)
  4. Your confidence grows a tiny bit
  5. Creating the next piece feels slightly easier
  6. Repeat 🔄

Let me break down why this works so well:

First, confidence comes from repeated exposure. Just like going to the gym, the first few times feel awkward and uncomfortable. But by your 10th visit? You're walking in like you own the place. Publishing content works the same way.

Second, here's some good news: In the beginning, fewer people see your work anyway. This is actually a gift—it's your chance to practice without pressure. Think of it as your training ground.

Third, creativity is like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets. Ever noticed how musicians can play complex pieces without thinking? That's not magic—it's muscle memory from consistent practice. Your content creation skills work the same way.

The key? Set a low-bar publishing habit. One newsletter, one post, or one video per week. That's it. Keep it simple, but keep it consistent.

What the Pros Know: Advice from Ali Abdaal

One of my favorite examples of this principle in action comes from YouTuber Ali Abdaal, who has grown to over 3 million subscribers. Here's what he says:

"It is far more important when you're starting out on YouTube to make 100 really bad videos than to try and make 10 really good videos."

He backs this up with a fascinating story known as the parable of the pottery class. The teacher divided the class into two groups: one had to make a pot every day for 30 days, while the other group focused on making a single "perfect" pot over the same period.

The result? Every single prize-winning pot came from the quantity group. Why? Because practice beats perfection every time.

Your Action Plan for This Week

  1. Pick ONE type of content you want to focus on
  2. Set a simple weekly goal (1 post, 1 video, or 1 newsletter)
  3. Create and publish something—anything—in the next 48 hours
  4. Mark your calendar for the next 4 weeks of publishing dates

Remember: Your first piece doesn't need to be perfect. It just needs to exist.

See you next week!

Matt

P.S. Reply to this email with your content goal for the week. I read every response, and I'd love to cheer you on!
